To attend training sessions and to play in a polocrosse tournament all riders and horses must be suitable tacked up and wear the necessary gear in order to stay protected!
Horse:
| Body Part |
What you need |
Why? |
| Legs |
Exercise / polo bandages or sports medicine type boots on all 4 legs.
over reach / bell boots on all 4 legs E |
Because polocrosse is a close contact sport, which requires horses to ride against each other, the sport requires all horses to be suitable booted / bandaged to prevent injury to tendons and to skin. |
| Head |
General bridle (NO hackamore's). nose bands and flashed can be used. E |
Hackamore's are not suitable for the game as the nature of the game requires the rider to stop the horse suddenly and a hackamore could cause harm, and lack of control. |
| Mouth |
Most bits can be used - except 3 ring gags, bits with shanks such as driving bits, pelhams. E |
Bits with shanks can get caught in another horses tack, and can be dangerous when riding another player off (potentially causing an injury to the horse) |
| Back |
GP saddles can be used, also Stock Saddles (see pic). E
All saddles have to have an over-girth attached.
all saddles also have to be fitted with a breast plate.E Headchecks are optional.
No western saddles with horns are allowed.E
|
Over girths are required to stop the saddle slipping, when leaning off the saddle, also to help in an incident if the girth snapped!
Breast plate is needed to stop the saddle from moving backwards.
Western saddles with horns can be dangerous to the rider and are unsuitable for the sport as it requires the rider to bend down to pick up the ball! |
Rider:
| Head |
All riders need to wear an approved riding helmet that meets up to date standards Click here for rules on hats that can be worn at UKPA tournaments.
It is optional to wear a face guard. E |
For safety!
Polocrosse is a close contact sport which, like all horse sports, increases the risk of an injury to the head if not wearing the appropriate equipment! |
| Feet |
All riders should riding boots, cowboy boots, with a small heal. E
Trainers and wellies are not appropriate
The rider can also wear spurs - they cannot have spikes, but have to be roller spurs - cannot use english spurs. |
Trainers and Wellies are dangerous as the foot can slip through the stirrup, causing a fall or worse, you could be dragged along the floor if you cannot get free from the horse if you fell! |
| Knees |
Knee guards are optional, but they help protect your knees when riding another player off! |
